Roller Chain Drive — validation & limitations

What this calculator checks and the method behind each result, the independent reference cases its engine is tested against, and what it does not check. Use it to decide how far you can rely on a result.

What it calculates

Standard / method: ISO 606

ISO 606 / ANSI B29.1 chain selection · ANSI/ACA multiple-strand factors (K_s = 1.7 duplex, 2.5 triplex) · industry replacement criterion (1.5 % elongation)

  • ISO 606 / ANSI B29.1 automatic roller chain selection with service factor and per-speed safety factor
  • Sprocket geometry: pitch-circle, tip (ANSI B29.1) and root (ISO 606) diameters, wrap angle, centre distance and even-link count
  • Chain wear-life estimation with lubrication quality and contamination factors (1.5 % elongation industry/manufacturer replacement criterion)
  • Polygonal (chordal) effect speed-variation analysis vs the small-sprocket tooth count
  • Multi-strand capacity using the ANSI/ACA multiple-strand factors (K_s = 1.7 duplex, 2.5 triplex, 3.3 quad)
  • Lubrication type classification (Type A–D bands after ANSI/ACA rating-chart practice; tool thresholds) with estimated sump temperature

Standards this tool applies

  • ISO 606 — ISO 606 B-series chain dimensions and sprocket geometry; selection by tension rating capped by the ANSI/ACA rating (conservative tool values below the published minimum); polygonal effect, wear life and a lubrication advisory using the tool's own speed/power thresholds.

Validation evidence — independent reference cases (0)

Each case runs the tool's engine on a worked example whose values come from a published source or a hand derivation from the cited equations, and an automated regression test asserts the engine against those values within the stated tolerance. "Conservative" means the engine is known to sit on the safe side of the reference and the test asserts that side. Sources are cited; their text is not reproduced.

No independent reference case is registered for this tool yet. Its engine is covered by the regression suite, but no published worked example has been reproduced end to end.

Limitations

Not checked by this tool

  • Peak, start-up and stall torque on the chain — Ks covers running shock only; check the breaking-load margin at peak torque with the chain maker's data
  • The selected chain maker's rated breaking load and power rating — Generic conservative values are used; confirm with the selected chain's catalogue
  • Slack-side sag, tensioner or idler layout — A horizontal drive with correct slack is assumed; add a tensioner for vertical or long-centre drives per the chain maker
  • Lubrication system design (oil flow, bath level, spray) — Only a lubrication-type advisory by speed; follow the chain maker's lubrication chart
  • Sprocket strength and the sprocket hub / key connection — Check the bore and key with /keys and the sprocket with the maker's data
  • Shaft and bearing sizing for the chain pull — Size the shafts with /shaft and the bearings with /bearings
